New Meta Research on 4MAT Model

• A recent meta-analysis of 4MAT research shows that 4MAT has an average effect size of 1.52 in math, biology, chemistry, physics, and applied sciences or science related subjects.  This implies that the average student that received learning activities based on the 4MAT Model scored higher on academic achievement test than 94.5% of students receiving the same instruction using traditional methods of teaching.

Designing with 4MAT: A Natural Cycle of Learning

Designing with 4MAT is our key live person to person training. Performed by a Master 4MAT trainer, or Dr. McCarthy if local. This course is 4 live sessions of 2 ½ hours each for a total of 10 hours taught at the client’s site usually on four consecutive days, or two days during two weeks.

The content on the four days moves from Style Preferences and the concept of Diversity, to Neuroscience, then whole brain learning, with day three the model itself; the 4MAT Natural Cycle. The final fourth day will be assessment taught conceptually with the concept of Voice.

We will schedule The Designing with 4MAT Course at the client’s and trainer’s agreed convenience.

Learning Outcome: Participants will create an original 4MAT lesson or unit and will receive certification as a 4MAT Practitioner  with the ability to use 4MAT Design in their own teaching. This qualifies you to attend 4MAT Advanced Training to go on to become a 4MAT Consultant.

Cost: $500  *Minimum of 5 students enrolled for this course.

Pre-Requisite:  None

Course Materials: 4 Live Sessions, 4MAT Pure & Simple, (3) Online Surveys:  LTM, HMI, TSI and 1 year subscription to 4MATion our lesson planning software with the magical “Wizard” that walks you through creating your original 4MAT lesson/unit.

Reflections of a 4MAT Math Teacher

Before 4MAT I was a “lefty”.

Not left handed, left brain dominated.

I could lecture with the best of them, reaching my quadrant 2 kids in class with domination! I had no time for the “when are we ever gonna use this” quadrant 1 kids and even less time for the quadrant 4 kids who had ants in their pants. Occasionally I found some “cool worksheets” that seemed to satisfy the quadrant 3 kids in my room, but that was few and far between. I was starting to listen to the “whiner” teachers who always complained about teaching and was starting to believe some of what they were saying.

When a well respected teacher in our district offered the 4MAT class, I took it because I needed some credits and I knew she would be good. Little did I know what that class would do for me and my students… I call it my “eye opener”. I realized that the trouble I always had trying to learn something brand new with a group was not some fault I had, but rather was because of my learning style. I began to see purpose in connecting students to the material, which I never needed myself. And, I began to think “outside the box” which was a stretch at first.

I vividly remember doing my first 4MAT wheel in class.

We were going to do a connect activity where each student would pick up a cup of liquid, one of which was the “infected” cup with the “Aids virus”. They would be “exchanging fluids” and trying to figure out who the original infected person was. The activity was going to be my lead in to exponential growth. I hardly slept the night before…I was a nervous wreck….what if it didn’t work….what if the topic brought up questions or situations I did not know how to deal with? The what ifs went on and on…. When the day came and my first class came in I was ready….things were going well right up the point where I was suppose to “test” everyone to see who was infected. I grabbed the wrong bottle and began giving “Aids” to everyone instead of testing for it! “Ok…class I just messed up, we get to do it again…”

They weren’t complaining, they were still in shock we weren’t in rows taking notes! The rest of the day went great and each class came in asking if they were going to get “Aids” too! They had heard all about it from other students and couldn’t wait to get to class! For some crazy reason they never came in saying that about one of my lectures!! I was hooked.

I caught 4MAT fever!

4MAT Field Research on Student Learning Preferences

Many Educational Organizations throughout the world now recognize the importace of accounting for Student Learning Differncess when designing and deveoloping hiqh quality learning experiences.

About Learning offers training and online assessment tool for helping educational organizations analyze and assess these differences. But our ultimate goal is to help people design teaching and learning that accounts for these differences.

Our mission is to empower teachers to design instruction that accounts for the different ways people learn.

Here is research from two organizations who have used these tools with great success—Long Beach City College, in Long Beach, CA and Moanalua High School in Honolulu, HI.  These student samples represent a group of over 4,000 students.

Here are some of the key instructional design steps in the 4-Part 4MAT Design Process. Our model uses four quadrants of learning to move students through a full learning experience. It begins by Engaging Students to Informing Students to Coaching Students, to encouraging students to adapt learning into their lives.

A Key question to consider?

If only 12-21% of Students prefer learning through traditional lectures and or information delivery, what will it take to reframe instruction to account for a fuller range of student learning approaches?
